A recent research report from Lateral Economics released on the 23rd of September shows that every $1 spent on the Census generates $6 to the Australian economy.

The findings estimated that from a five year investment of $670 million into the Census, the annual benefit from it is around $800 million. This comes from Census data in services and planning, infrastructure planning and targeting, improved policy design, commercial uses and public goods.

The report examined both the economic and non-economic value of the Census to the Australian public and concluded that the Census generated far more economic benefits than losses from the cost of executing the five-yearly survey.
