New data released from the ABS has found that Australian retail turnover increased 0.1% in May 2019. This figure previously fell 0.1% in April 2019.
This rise is demonstrated across the industry, and was recorded in:
- Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services by 0.7%
- Household goods retailing by 0.5%
- Other retailing by 0.5%
These increases were offset by falls recorded in:
- Food retailing by -0.3%
- Department stores by -0.4%
- Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing by -0.2%
Online retail turnover contributed 6.2% to total retail turnover in original terms in May 2019. This figure has increased from 5.7% in April 2019. It has also increased since last year, as online retail turnover contributed only 5.6% to total retail in May 2018.
